What is Reiki?
Dr Mikao Usui, a Japanese doctor, developed or 'discovered' reiki at the end of the 19th century from his study of ancient Buddhist texts, travel, research and meditation. The system was introduced to the US in the 1970s by Hawaio Takata, a Japanese woman living in Hawaii, who learned it from one of Usui's pupils, Dr Chujiro Hayashi. It is now practised throughout the Western world where its popularity is growing fast due to excellent healing results. A number of nurses and other health care professionals are trained as practitioners.
The Usui system of Reiki is a simple, hands-on healing technique using sacred symbols which have been used for healing purposes for thousands of years. In this process the vitalizing, spiritual force of Universal Life energy is brought in from outside one's body, and transferred through the palms of the hands to various energy centres in the body.
When channelled by an inititate, Reiki is said to intensify vibration of body molecules so that blockages that may cause disharmony and disease are dissolved. In this way it helps with all kinds of physical, mental, emotional or spiritual issues.
The Reiki energy permeates all levels of the physical, mental, emotional, and several spiritual bodies and aids their development. Reiki energy can be used in self-treatment, treatments for family, friends, clients, pets, plants and in absent healing methods.
Reiki is a spiritual path as well as a form of healing, yet belief is not necessary as Reiki is not a religion.
A Reiki treatment enhances the wellbeing of both the giver and the receiver of Reiki. Reiki addresses itself to the part of you that understands everything and has the ability to heal every level of your being. A Reiki treatment or an attunement to Reiki will awaken and release this transformational power.
What happens during a Reiki Treatment?
To receive a Reiki treatment, you simply lie down on a couch or comfortable chair, relax and close your eyes. No clothes have to be removed. The practitioner channels healing Reiki energy to balance your chakras, a Sanskrit term for 'energy centres', by placing their hands gently on or just over your body for a few minutes at a series of positions on your head, and the front and the back of your body. A full treatment usually takes 60-90 minutes.
Reiki healers make themselves into channels of the universal life energy which is drawn through the chakras to areas of imbalance where it works for the highest good. This means that healing can be emotional or spiritual as well as, or rather than, physical.
Feelings of deep relaxation, warmth, tingling or invigoration are often reported. Participants often feel so relaxed that they fall asleep and can often have new insights into themselves.
